Dead Zine is a project my friend Bob is working on, hook him up with submission, old school style, via MAIL. yes, MAIL.
FROM THE DESK OF BOB PURVIS:
Hey everyone,
I have been thinking a lot about death lately and have found that it helps me a lot to write about it and read and hear about what other people think and feel when it comes to their own mortality. Other times it makes me crawl under the covers and curl into the fetal position.
Anyways, I thought it might be interesting to put a zine together to showcase the many ways we confront life and death. It would be black and white and printed cheaply, so take that into consideration for any art or photography you'd submit. Go fucking nuts, 50 pages of goth poetry will not suffice.
I haven't thought about what to call it yet either and am open to suggestions. If you aren't interested but know someone who might be, please pass this along. If you don't you will get 30 years bad luck and lots of junk mail about pornography.
Questions? robertallenpurvis@hotmail.com
Please mail any and all submissions with a return address (so I can send you a copy) to:

Wednesday, oh rainy Wednesday why aren't you sunny?
I had a surprise interview with American Craft magazine this past weekend. One of the editors saw the clip from Handmade Nation and wanted to help spread the word. It's very exciting to think I could get some interest from the "traditional" crafts-people community. I also did an interview for a Swedish magazine, more on that another time.
This Friday is Spring Gallery Night here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.......
If I didn't have to stay at Paper Boat I would go to Riverwest and check out the scene over there, I swung by Neighbors Gallery yesterday while putting up flyers and Polina has a lot of amazing work to install. It looked good just laying around so when she works her magic it will look incredible, I'm sure of it. Then I would go to A-Hem, which is a clothing store that is hosting a show by Kim Weiss. Weiss is a Milwaukee artist who I met via Art vs. Craft. She is a great painter and is doing a show of small birds who are wearing a lot of royal clothes. I purchased two of them last Art vs. Craft and they hang in my bedroom, they really are worth checking out. THEN, I would go by MIAD for the senior show. There is always something worth seeing mixed in with a bunch of, well, art school crap. Last year is where I discovered the work of local artist Cassandra Smith who worked with us last year. At Paper Boat is the work of my best friend and painter extraordinaire Micaela O'Herlihy who will be exhibiting along side of her art school friend Veronica De Jesus (CA):::

By the way Art vs. Craft is now accepting applications, but only until April 30th!!! Get to it you creative peeps!

Help!!
I am looking for a part time summer assistant to help with a variety of art related projects I am currently working on in Milwaukee.
My affiliations are co-owner of Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery (www.paperboatboutique.com), Coordinator of Art vs. Craft (www.artvscraft.com) and Director of Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft & Design (www.indiecraftdocumentary.com)
This will currently be an UNPAID position (5-15 hours a week) that you will hopefully gain a lot of experience from if you are interested in curating art events, running a gallery, and supporting a healthy art community.
Duties will include assistance with email correspondence, data entry, helping with promotions, meeting other artists, crafters & designer and networking.
Please check out the listed websites to see if you are interested in what I'm working on. I would love to help a student get some independent work credit/internship in exchange for your time. Let me know if that is a possibility.

****

Last week I went to Pittsburgh for the first ever Craft Congress, which was amazing. I enjoyed it purely for the fact that I got to see so many amazing people in one room.
More pictures HERE
For me a big part of the weekend's event was passing out tote bags with the new official name of the Documentary I've been working on for the past year. Indie Craft Documentary is now titled
Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft & Design
Their will be a sneak peek up on youtube or our site, within the week for everyone to view!
This week involves painting album art for a Call Me Lightning/Get Rad split 7", editing, playing a show with Wooden Robot at Cactus Club tomorrow night with David Brown and tackling my taxes (laaammmme) and finising up updating the Art vs. Craft site so we can launch the application for the July show.
Some links to check out:::
* Miranda July's new book has a good website.
* My friend Timm Gable Directed a film about Polka and it's screening in NY this week-
watch the trailer they made for it.
* My friend Drew Rosas who also did some camera work for Handmade Nation made a rap for a contest, watch the video and vote for him HERE
Have a good week.
